Abstract Integrating the IoT with a distributed ledger technology could be the best option to tackle various problems. The blockchain is one of the most well known and widely used forms of distributed ledger technology. The Internet of Things, or IoT, is a new technology that makes it possible for real and virtual items to connect and interact with one another. This technology creates new digital services that enhance our quality of life. The IoT system offers a number of benefits, but its present centralized architecture brings a number of problems, including data integrity, security, privacy, and single points of failure. These difficulties stand in the way of the further development of Internet of Things applications. There are several advantages to combining blockchain technology and the IoT. Combining blockchain technology with the idea of a “smart city” may be beneficial in solving these issues with urban cities, as it will improve living conditions and help build a long-term sustainable solution. Using a rigorous and auditable systematic review approach, this study aims to consolidate existing information on the issue, assess current and ongoing research advancements, and pave the way for future studies. The results indicated that the number of research publications specifically focusing on blockchain and IoT in smart cities, etc. has increased exponentially in recent years. Blockchain is one of the technologies that have drawn a lot of interest recently as it provides new options for people and organizations operating in the various frameworks. The IoT is another emerging technical advancement that has the potential to drastically alter society, along with blockchain and AI. A potent analytical technique called marketing mix modeling (MMM) enables companies to comprehend how their marketing initiatives affect their entire performance. This chapter explores the benefits and limitations associated with blockchain, IoT, and MMM technologies and provides a summary of global blockchain and IoT success stories. The use of blockchain, IoT, and MMM technologies is also examined in this chapter. In addition, this chapter examines the literature of scientific research on the idea and principles of blockchain to investigate the potential and contribution of blockchain in smart cities. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
