Abstract In this study, the combination of Blockchain technology with the Internet of Things (IoT) in smart cities is investigated. Specifically, the study investigates how characteristics of Blockchain, such as immutability, decentralization, and consensus, might be utilized to address the challenges that are associated with smart cities. It examines IoT applications in smart cities, such as traffic management and waste control, underlining the important role that data plays in these applications. This highlights the significance of Blockchain technology in the identification of devices, the protection of data integrity, and the conduct of transactions within a decentralized network. The use of Blockchain technology in smart cities has been shown to have a few advantages, including the optimization of operations, the enhancement of security, and the trust and confidence of participants. In conclusion, it illustrates the constraints that exist in terms of privacy and security, which include energy consumption, scalability, and regulations, further highlighting the necessity of finding solutions to overcome these issues. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Shitharth Selvarajan, Gouse Baig Mohammad, Sadda Bharath Reddy, and Praveen Kumar Balachandran; individual chapters, the contributors.
