Abstract By exploiting the ubiquitous nature of Internet of Things (IoT) technology in smart cities, we propose an Agent-assisted Smart Auction-based Parking (ASAP) system for Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) and Parking Facility Providers (PFP). In order to improve parking space allocation, we incorporate a fair recurrent Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) auction mechanism. ASAP leverages truthful bidding from the bidders while providing higher utilization to PFPs due to the inherent ability of AVs to move without the presence of an actual human in them, thus increasing revenue. The main contribution of this paper is the introduction of parking auction through sophisticated software agents that are capable of quickly and seamlessly performing tasks such as parking lookup, negotiation, pricing, and reservation. We introduce an auction-related priority such that it serves two purposes: (1) provides fairness by restraining bidders opt out, and (2) reduces traffic that arises as a result of increased utilization of parking space with AVs' ability to move by themselves. ASAP guarantees the properties of strategy-proofness, individual rationality, and budget balance. It sacrifices allocation efficiency to ensure the fairness issue. Simulation results show that the proposed scalable and interactive agents of ASAP enable efficient processing of a vast amount of data, providing cost savings for parkers looking for parking, and improving usability of public and private parking facilities. © 2019 Association for Computing Machinery.
