Abstract More than half of the world’s population currently lives in cities due to growing urbanization, which presents significant obstacles for sustainable development. As cities struggle with issues like unbridled urban sprawl, scarce resources, pollution, and overcrowding, the idea of “smart cities” has come to light as a cutting-edge framework for guiding future urban expansion. The foundation of this concept is the development of internet-connected metropolitan areas for the purposes of maximizing resources, using data insights and enhancing quality of life via technology integration. In order to construct smart and sustainable cities, this chapter focuses on new trends in architecture and urban planning. In order to integrate technology, maximize resources, improve mobility and give inhabitants a good quality of life, it covers important design concepts and planning issues. In order to create future-ready smart urban habitats, current ideas like mixed-use areas, transit-oriented development, green infrastructure and responsive structures are examined. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Susheela Hooda, Vidhu Kiran, Rupali Gill, Durgesh Srivastava, Jabar H.
