Abstract This chapter focuses on the key issues in designing cities for sustainable transportation. Existing literature highlights the intricate connections between transportation, land use, and urban development. This chapter employs a systematic analysis approach to synthesize existing research and related materials. A combination of major academic databases, including Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, and IEEE Xplore, were used in data collection. Smart cities, conceptualized to enhance urban sustainability, are expected to improve the quality of life, production, consumption, and transportation efficiency. However, global reports reveal delays and incompleteness in many smart city projects because of the insufficient incorporation of sustainable and inclusive elements. To address this gap, this chapter aims to systematically investigate strategies for improving the integration of sustainable and inclusive elements into smart city projects, specifically emphasizing sustainable transportation. © 2024, IGI Global.
