Abstract The rapid evolution of smart cities is giving workable solutions to many challenges faced in urban areas. Information and communication technology (ICT) is playing a very vital role in the development of modern smart cities. Smart cities are the key role players in the social and economic development of the residents. It contributes to providing better services in the areas of education, healthcare, traffic management, and so on, which further improve the standards of living. There is a need for sustainable solutions in these domains. Various computational and communication technologies are playing a very vital role in catering sustainable quality services to the citizens. In this chapter, the authors have presented the basic framework for the realization of the concept of a smart city. Various computational technologies, their contributions to smart city development, and the challenges faced are discussed in detail. Domain-specific applications of the technology in the various smart city subsystems are also presented. The world's top smart cities with their countries are also mentioned.
