Abstract This research explores the burgeoning field of adaptable architecture as a critical component in the development of smart cities, focusing on its role in meeting dynamic energy requirements and enhancing urban sustainability. Smart cities, characterized by the integration of advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), are at the forefront of combining technology with sustainability, thereby revolutionizing urban design and management. Adaptable architecture in these settings is increasingly recognized as a progressive approach to urban development, essential for fostering resilience and energy efficiency. The central challenge addressed in this study is the provision of energy in densely populated urban areas, which are significant contributors to global energy consumption. The research delves into how adaptable architecture, using energy-efficient materials, innovative technologies, and renewable energy sources, can effectively meet fluctuating energy demands while promoting sustainability. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the principles underlying adaptable architecture and provides case studies from various smart cities to illustrate its practical applications. The future implications of evolving technologies in this field are also explored, underscoring the potential for continuous improvement and adaptation in urban infrastructure. Ultimately, this research contributes to a comprehensive understanding of how adaptable architecture can play a pivotal role in shaping the sustainable and resilient smart cities of the future. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
