Abstract Digital Twins (DTs) are data-centric solutions at the core of innovative solutions for Smart Cities (SCs). Despite the importance of effective and efficient data management, existing reference architectures fail to detail the supporting functionality for data management and the architectural elements that provide it. In this chapter, we summarize the properties of the data to be managed by DTs in the SC context, outline the required data management capabilities and key issues, and advance the state-of-the-art by proposing a reference architecture for data management. The architecture follows well-established design principles and is structured into multiple layers, each serving a specific purpose and grouping architectural components accordingly. The result is a comprehensive architectural approach that separates and standardizes tasks required for managing data in DTs for SCs. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
