Abstract A city can be considered a system that obtains and manages information gathered from various physical objects that are human or artificial. In these circumstances, a digital twin (DT) is a virtual representation of an object, which is updated with real-time data and uses simulation, Internet of Things, machine learning, and reasoning to help with decision-making. This study covers a literature survey on DT in smart cities. The chapter aims to present a process modeling approach for the development of a digital twin application in a smart city. This DT application is to support managers in studying and evaluating community polities through what-if scenarios. In this study, authors propose to use agent technology and Business Product Model and Notation (BPMN) in the digital twin process modeling, as well as the multiagent JADE platform at the implementation level, i.e., for application development. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
