Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT) connects everything in the “smart world”; so energy consumption in the IoT environment is the most challenging issue for developing smart cities. IoT technology growth has altered lifestyles and benefited society in numerous ways; yet, we should not ignore the reality that IoT uses energy and produces electrical waste (E-waste) and contributes to harmful impacts on the environment due to toxic pollution. The IoT has applications in various aspects of our lives in areas like agriculture, health, transportation, and environmental monitoring. As each IoT device has energy constrained, ideal energy consumption rate maintenance is a major challenge in the IoT research field. In order to maximize the benefits and minimize the harmfulness of IoT, there are emerging tendencies to use green IoT (GIoT). The GIoT is regarded as the next sustainable IoT. The GIoT emphasizes the need for green ICT technology, which offers society numerous advantages including efficient production, a decrease in the amount of energy consumption to create and distribute ICT devices, and an eco-friendly environment. This chapter first provides background knowledge on IoT along with its evolution and working principles. The trends of IoT in terms of various application areas and different challenges faced in their implementation have been discussed afterwards. With the desire to achieve an IoT world in a smart city environment with minimal power usage, the GIoT, its strategies with green taxonomy, and energy-efficient approaches for GIoT and security enhancement in smart cities have been presented. The concept of edge AI with the benefits they can bring to the current situation in various research lines such as natural language processing, computer vision, IoT, and virtual reality. Advanced computing techniques, which analyse performance based on criteria at the network edge, such as latency, and energy consumption have been discussed. Finally, GIoT challenges and future research directions related to GIoT have been discussed. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, [Shalli Rani]; individual chapters, the contributors.
