Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT) is a technological paradigm that establishes connections between devices, hardware, and products by integrating electronics, sensors, firmware, and software. This integration enables the devices to store, collect, and transmit data over the internet, thereby enhancing efficiency, productivity, and convenience across diverse sectors, including healthcare, smart cities, and agriculture. Projections indicate that the economic impact of IoT could range from USD 2.7 trillion to 6.2 trillion by 2025, potentially transforming various domains such as healthcare applications, intelligent homes, smart cities, and agriculture. The emergence of the green IoT addresses the growing concerns about energy consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with IoT technology. The concept of the "green Internet of Things" (GIoT) aims to enhance energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. As the number of internet-enabled objects surpasses the global population, GIoT focuses on boosting energy efficiency in all aspects of IoT systems, from design to implementation. GIoT techniques encompass machine-to-machine communication, radio frequency optimization, and energy optimization in smart devices. The significance of GIoT has heightened due to the depletion of conventional energy sources and the escalating energy consumption. Techniques in the GIoT can be broadly classified into two main groups: software-based approaches that target energy waste reduction through improved resource utilization and hardware-based strategies that aim to enhance energy efficiency in smart devices. This paper delves into the realm of the GIoT in the specific context of smart agricultural monitoring. As energy consumption on IoT devices becomes a critical concern, GIoT emerges as a crucial framework. The study explores a comprehensive range of techniques, spanning both software and hardware advancements, aimed at optimizing energy efficiency in smart devices deployed for agricultural monitoring. By investigating the potential of GIoT in the agricultural sector, this research contributes valuable insights towards sustainable and eco-friendly practices in smart farming, ensuring a balance between technological innovation and environmental conservation. © © 2025 Biswaranjan Acharya, Ankita Bansal, Abha Jain, Rachna Jain and Joel J.
