Abstract Waste management in smart cities plays a significant role in maintaining public health and protecting environment from air and water pollution. A good waste management system supports the sustainable environment in smart cities. The proposed research study n this article focuses on the integrated approach of UAVs and WebGL virtual roaming system for managing waste in smart cities. The integration ofWebGL into drones (UAVs) can certainly help in efficient management of waste with the aid of real-time visualization and data analytics. Drones are equipped with LiDAR sensors for gathering data on waste collection, waste disposal, illegal dumping, waste sorting, recycling, and status of public services. The data collected by the drones is visualized using WebGL in real time environment on the base stations which provides 3D interactive view of the waste system in the smart city. This allows the urban planners for preparing responses to manage the waste more effectively, as WebGL visualizations provide a strong and instinctive representation of the gathered data.WebGL in integration with UAVs, intelligent image processing techniques with explainable AI facilitates the management of wastes by utilizing spatial analysis and data analytics in real-time. The accuracy of the proposed method (96%) shows the efficacy of the proposed integrated framework to monitor and manage the waste in smart cities. The memory usage and CPU usage is relatively low which also enhances the processing capability of the proposed waste management mechanism. The research conclusion indicates that WebGL virtual roaming system integrated in UAVs is beneficial for the development and management of the waste in smart cities efficiently. © 1975-2011 IEEE.
