Abstract This chapter provides an overview of different methodologies and frameworks utilized in smart city development and urban planning. Both top-down government-led approaches and bottom-up citizen-driven models are discussed. Key methodologies examined include human-centred design, integrated systems planning, geospatial intelligence frameworks, living lab pilots and open data platforms. The chapter analyses the relative benefits and limitations of each approach through case studies such as Singapore, Barcelona and Chicago. Effective smart city strategies require a blend of methodologies tailored to local contexts. Critical factors for success identified include public-private partnerships, interoperability standards, citizen participation and adaptable technologies. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Susheela Hooda, Vidhu Kiran, Rupali Gill, Durgesh Srivastava, Jabar H.
