Abstract Growing interest in creating “smart cities,” which use connectivity, data, and technology to improve sustainability, efficiency, and quality of life, is a result of the rapid urbanization trend. An extensive review of smart city research and application is given in this publication. In order to provide intelligent management and services, definitions place a strong emphasis on the application of big data analytics, new innovations, Internet of Things (IoT), and information and communication technologies (ICT) across urban domains. Key frameworks describe critical dimensions like technology, sustainability, governance, economy, society and data analytics. Major application areas analysed include smart energy, mobility, government, infrastructure, healthcare and public safety. Emerging technologies examined include 5G, artificial intelligence, IoT, big data, blockchain and cloud computing. Global case studies provide insights on smart city models and leading practices. Despite complex challenges, the smart cities market continues to expand given rapid urbanization. A holistic strategy is required spanning technology, infrastructure, policy and society. Successful smart city development entails strong leadership, cross-sector collaboration and human-centric design. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Susheela Hooda, Vidhu Kiran, Rupali Gill, Durgesh Srivastava, Jabar H.
