Abstract Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) provide efficient and safe transportation along with improving vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. They are categorized according to their communication systems, propagation, mission, utilization, mobility, and deployment objectives and are used in military applications, disaster relief, surveillance, safety, and battlefield situations. This chapter focuses on various cutting-edge technology in VANETs, with their opportunities and upcoming research directions. We explore game theory applications to achieve optimized performance. This chapter can serve as a reference model for various factors such as architecture design, applications, characteristics, data security and privacy, roadmap of autonomous vehicles, current research status, parameter comparisons, challenges and future direction for smart cities. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Om Prakash Mahela, Baseem Khan and Puneet Kumar Jain. individual chapters, the contributors.
