Abstract Urbanization increases every day causing new challenges in city management. Smart city initiatives are aimed at using advanced technologies and communication methodologies to aid citizens to overcome the challenges of urbanization. Intelligent Transport Systems (ITSs) leverage VANET technologies to provide solutions that enhance Quality of Life (QoS) in urban areas. VANET enables the extension of communication either through the On Board Unit of the vehicle or smartphones available with the driver by either communicating with fixed infrastructures or to other vehicles. This enables the rapid spread of real-time vital information that provides driver assistance and safety. The GPS unit available with the driver helps in providing location-based services such as congestion and disaster management. This chapter provides a comprehensive review of the literature about VANET applications for urban areas, traffic management and control techniques, driver assistance, and safety methodologies. VANET technology such as communication and routing protocols that aid in ITS applications is also given and the comparison of existing systems is mentioned in Table 10.1. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, L Ashok Kumar, R.
