Abstract Chapter 10 investigates how Higher Education (HE) institutions such as universities can catalyze smart sustainable development. Four common smart education phenomena are identified, including out-branching and outsourcing educational services. The chapter discusses the significant role universities can play in sustainable development by integrating interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary research to solve current urban problems. Recent examples and case studies illustrate the university’s role and the way this mechanism works. The final section of the chapter illuminates how the HE curriculum can help to promulgate smart disciplines such as the sustainable cities development idea, or Ambient Intelligence and Smart City programs and courses. © 2018 selection and editorial matter, Simon Huston; individual chapters, the contributors.
