Abstract The IoT has an opportunity to turn cities into 'smart cities' that are more productive, environmentally friendly, and habitable. IoT-enabled smart cities may give real-time data on numerous elements of urban life by linking a large number of sensors and devices. These aspects include things like traffic, energy usage, and air quality. This information may then be put to use to increase the quality of life for inhabitants, as well as improve public safety and urban infrastructure and services. In this article, we present an overview of the current state of the art in devices-enabled smart cities. This includes both the technology and the applications that are already being employed, as well as the difficulties that must be solved in order to allow their wider adoption. We also explore potential advances in the industry, including the possible applications of upcoming technologies like 5G, which is computing on the edge, and robotics. © 2023 IEEE.
