Abstract Innovation in “smart cities” is accelerating at a rate never seen before in modern history. From a development, operations, and maintenance standpoint, smart cities are undergoing rapid change of all kinds. To achieve this advanced level of urbanization and fully utilize digital infrastructure for rapid urban growth, today's Smart Cities are striving. When it comes to making their cities better places to live and providing inhabitants with more comfortable and joyful living options, Smart Cities are utilizing a variety of tools and technologies to become smarter and more connected with their stakeholders through technology. The relentless expansion of urban areas has brought with it a host of new social, economic, and environmental problems, all of which must be tackled in concert if humanity is to achieve its goal of a more sustainable global community. It is crucial to provide planners with the necessary tools to tackle these issues, with sustainability being one of the primary goals. Incorporating digital twins with modeling and simulation capabilities can greatly enhance the use of these technologies. Integrating these models and technology improves data-driven environmental planning processes, which in turn offers new ways to tackle difficult environmental problems. However, to get the intended results, one must carefully navigate and mitigate the many complicated obstacles that this undertaking presents. For sustainable urban development, this study provides an all-inclusive reference that will inspire future studies, initiatives, and policymaking. This book chapter goes into detail on a number of these important technologies that are having a beneficial impact on Smart Cities. The manner in which these technologies are influencing the growth and functioning of Smart Cities is also emphasized. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
