Abstract There are now discussions over a “smart city” concept that relies on advanced technology and data-driven strategies for improving the living standards of people in urban areas, sustainability, and enhancing the operational efficiency of urban services. This chapter presents a view into the smart city, its historical evolution, and the technology, specifically IoT and Big Data Analytics, that is fuelling the development of smart cities. Smart cities provide several advantages such as better living standards, better resource management, transportation, boosting the economy and encouraging innovations. Yet, their practical application involves barriers like substantial costs, suitable compatibility of infrastructure, interoperability, governance, and privacy issues, and effective data administration. Taking them up, we explore the emerging concept of a digital twin, which provides a dynamic virtual representation of a physical object or system, integrated with real-time data to drive decision-making for better smart city management. Connectivity is identified as basic utilities, required to operate smart cities, with emphasis on broadband infrastructure and 5G technology. In this regard, the paper discusses the use of digital twins in different areas like home, transportation, energy, and healthcare and stresses on interoperability of collaboration and data exchange. This is followed by an examination of how connectivity operates as a driver for smart city digital change, with emphasis on its vital interplay with digital twins. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Susheela Hooda, Vidhu Kiran, Rupali Gill, Durgesh Srivastava, Jabar H.
