Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT) is a new concept in the world of information and communication technology, and, in recent years, it has gained a lot of attention in research communities and users in smart cities. IoT refers to a network in which every physical object is identified by an identity and forms a network with other objects. IoT is the future of the internet, and it will simplify many complex services in the future. The new applications of IoT provide innovative actions in smart cities worldwide, and the explosive growth of smart cities and IoT applications poses many scientific challenges that require research efforts from industry and academia, especially for the development of smart cities based on IoT. Protocols, architectures, and new services are among the basic needs to respond to these challenges. With the increase in energy tariffs, the issue of energy consumption and its related costs in cities has taken on new dimensions. Because the energy of sensor nodes is usually provided by batteries, the most important issue that needs to be examined in these networks is to reduce the energy consumption of nodes so that the network’s lifetime increases to an acceptable level. © 2024 Scrivener Publishing LLC.
