Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT) has gained significant traction by offering technology for linking different gadgets to the Internet and enabling communications between machines and humans. Many tech and business communities have invested a lot in IoT research and development over the past two decades. However, IoT technology is still in its infancy, and many challenges must be solved. IoT is a common buzzword in IT sector. IoT transforms real-world objects and technical gadgets into intelligent virtual beings which can communicate over the internet. By uniting everything in our environment under a unified infrastructure, the IoT intends to make it possible for us to manage and keep an eye on the things in our immediate surroundings. The current study analyses IoT concepts by conducting a methodical review of academic journals, business white papers, interviews with industry professionals, and online databases. Moreover, this research article focuses on the application of IoT in smart cities. This article aims to give an overview of IoT and its important technologies, along with their scope in making smart cities. This article discusses in depth many IoT-based applications. IOT makes use of different technologies, viz. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) as well as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). It emphasizes the fact that devices that everyone uses commonly are connected via the Internet. Amidst this intricate situation, the incorporation of IoT in an urban setting holds particular significance as a means to address the government's focus on utilizing IoT-based devices for public affairs management, in order to realize the smart city paradigm. © 2023 IEEE.
