Abstract The use of UAVs for transport infrastructure projects is a field in which new emerging technologies and applications are constantly being developed. To ensure the proper direction of the advancements in emerging technologies related to UAVs, it is important to precisely define and establish priorities that align with the overall transport infrastructure policy goals. This article describes the state of the art of applications of UAVs in the field of road transport infrastructure and identifies the key challenges and barriers. The gradual transition to smart cities, the ability to manage huge amounts of data, the continuous development of artificial intelligence and the upcoming integration of autonomous and connected vehicles in traffic, highlight the potential of UAVs as part of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), making them powerful tools, with a potential impact on even more sectors of the economy. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, A.F.
