Abstract Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as a disruptive technology with a vast array of applications across various industries. As urbanization continues to rapidly increase, traditional transportation systems face numerous challenges, such as congestion, pollution, and inefficiency. Innovative and sustainable solutions are needed to address these issues, and UAVs, equipped with advanced technologies and artificial intelligence, have the potential to revolutionize the transportation landscape. In smart cities, UAVs can be utilized to enhance the efficiency of transportation systems by monitoring traffic, conducting surveys, delivering goods, and providing emergency medical assistance. By optimizing transportation infrastructure with UAVs, cities can reduce traffic congestion, improve overall mobility, and reap the benefits of their autonomous capabilities. The integration of wireless communication capabilities allows UAVs to transmit real-time data to control centers, vehicles, and infrastructure, facilitating coordination and collaboration in the transportation network. Despite the challenges, such as regulatory frameworks, privacy concerns, and communication infrastructure, the future of UAVs in elevating human life lies in their integration into intelligent transportation systems (ITS) within smart cities. Careful considerations and collaborations are necessary to overcome these challenges and ensure a safe and efficient transportation ecosystem. This paper aims to explore the future of UAVs in elevating human life, specifically focusing on their role in ITS within smart cities. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Pawan Singh, Sudesh Kumar, Sachin Kumar Gupta, Abhay Kumar Rai and Abdu Saif.
