Abstract Smart Cities have emerged as a promising approach to address the complex challenges associated with urbanization and sustainability. Technical solutions, such as Internet of Things (ITo) devices, data analytics and automation, play a pivotal role in transforming traditional cities into intelligent, interconnected and efficient urban centers. While the implementation of these technical solutions offers numerous benefits, it also introduces social challenges that need careful consideration, as we outline in this article. The article employs a method that involves analyzing examples of modern solutions in Smart Cities found in both the relevant literature and online sources. The aim of this article is to emphasize potential threats that may arise within Smart Cities societies. This issue holds considerable significance, and this article examines its various facets. Based on a thorough literature analysis, the authors posit the following considerations: during the implementation of modern technologies, heightened attention is warranted for potential adverse effects. It is imperative to develop comprehensive guidelines on each occasion to not only address these potential negative consequences but also to provide preventative measures against the adverse effects arising from the introduction of modern solutions. © 2023 IEEE.
