Abstract By 2050, approximately 66% of the world’s population will live in urban centres. Economic, social and environmental transformation, and inherent challenges are expected. Creating smarter cities through the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and capitalising on Internet of Things (IoT) expertise, are expected to resolve many of these challenges. Over the last decade, a plethora of studies has been undertaken regarding the use of these technology(ies) in diverse areas. Findings indicate operational efficiencies, improvements in infrastructure service(s), and environmental and societal benefits. However smart city implementations create inadvertent challenges, many arising from IoT usage itself. This chapter begins by exploring how smart ICT and IoT devices can be used to resolve urbanisation problems, including identifying the inherent risks, problems, issues and challenges with IoT use. Building on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) literature, this chapter argues that policymakers must re-orientate stakeholder engagement in the IoT’s decision-making process. Proposing that, through meaningful and productive stakeholder collaboration, via simultaneous top-down and bottom-up evolving engagement processes, relevant IoT risks, problems and issues can be addressed. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
