Abstract	Smart tourism is a conviction which refers to the use of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in tourism. However, the concept of smart tourism is not well-defined, hindering its theoretical development. This paper defines smart tourism and explores its branches, including sustainability and digitization. It also identifies emerging trends, future research directions, and challenges through a literature review analysis. The analysis focuses on articles related to sustainability and digitization obtained from the Web of Science and Google Scholar. The aim of this paper is to emphasize the importance of research in informing smart tourism development and management to address the identified challenges. © 2023 IEEE.
