Abstract Purpose: The purpose of the study is to reveal the specifics of smart technologies in tourism, taking into account government policy and the specifics of sectoral tourism practice in Russia. Design/Methodology/Approach: The researchers analyzed scientific publications and informatization practices in the tourist services sector. Initially, the approaches in literature and regulations to understanding the essence and specificity of smart tourism as part of the process of digitalization of the economy and the introduction of smart city technologies were considered. After that, considering the intersectoral nature of tourism and the specificity of its development processes, as well as the implementation of tourist services, a special interpretation of understanding the stages and directions of smart tourism development was given. Findings: Within the framework of disclosure of functional specifics and marketing value of smart technologies in tourism industry, the content of smart tourism, stages of its formation as a form of digitalization of economy are determined, specific practices of informatization taking into account industry sector of their application are highlighted, interested subjects of tourist relations are revealed. The institutional role of smart technology was defined, taking into account the form of tourism and the type of tourist activities. In addition, in order to identify the effectiveness of the industry’s use of smart technology in tourism, the researchers disclosed the actual content of developing tools for electronic information support of tourism relations. Furthermore, marketing characteristics of the means of smart technology system in tourism were presented, proposals were made on the nature and promising directions for their modernization. Originality/Value: The analysis of the theory and practice of organization of digitalization of tourism as a branch of economy, carried out on the basis of the comparative method, allowed allocating general and special approaches to introduction of information and smart technologies in tourism. Based on the system approach, a comprehensive description of current forms and directions of implementation of smart technologies in tourism, considering the specifics of participants of tourist relations and stakeholders, was presented. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
