Abstract The smart city concept revolves around the Internet of Things (IoT). Constant population growth, combined with urbanization, has increased the demand for creative urbanization measures that have the least negative influence on the environment, citizen life, and government. However, the existing works do not review various techniques and algorithms in smart city applications and also do not deal with their issues in maintaining some critical aspects in a smart city. This research incorporates IoT techniques, artificial intelligence techniques, blockchain techniques, and various other techniques and algorithms to provide smart city applications like as smart homes, smart waste management, smart water management, smart grids, smart healthcare, etc., and also investigates the issues in critical aspects and security, quality and accessibility, and planning and development in the smart city to improve the standard of smart city sustainability. Hence, this review paper investigates various techniques to provide smart city applications with solving these issues along with their significance and limitations in the smart city. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
