Abstract In this article, we highlight the key auxiliary functions of the narrowband Internet of things (NBIoT) in smart cities. In this study, we take into account the scenarios when there is already some infrastructure in place for the operations of smart cities. The adoption of NBIoT helps to streamline the resource management process and enhance overall operations. In the industrialized world, smart city programs are highly popular. It has recently gained popularity even in poorer nations. The smart city efforts include several duties. It includes such fundamental services as the provision of water and power, the upkeep of public lighting, traffic control in cities, waste disposal, and assistance with efficient law enforcement. It also offers cutting-edge services including smart healthcare, location-based tracking services, safety and surveillance monitoring, and smart vehicular networking. To help with these tasks, a number of services based on information and communication technology are deployed. IoT has been discovered to be outstanding in these service supply activities. There are several resources required for IoT implementation on a broad scale. NBIoT is one of the IoT versions that uses the least amount of resources, as is already well recognized. It is appropriate for widespread implementation in initiatives like smart grids and smart cities. In this article, we demonstrate how NBIoT may significantly aid in smart city operations. © 2023 IEEE.
