Abstract Sustainable smart cities' key indicators are essential standardized tools for assessing the intelligence and sustainability of cities across various sectors. These indicators are essential in evaluating the operational efficiency of smart cities while also determining the potential of traditional cities to transition into sustainable smart cities. By utilizing a defined set of criteria, these indicators help measure a city's strengths, identify existing challenges, and prioritize sectors and cities with the highest potential for smart transformation. Several international organizations have developed such indicators to assess the performance of sustainable smart cities. This study investigates how cities align with global sustainable smart city performance indicators by reviewing key metrics from international organizations focused on enhancing territorial intelligence and sustainability. The main goal is to create a set of "adaptive sustainable smart cities for key indicators" that can aid cities in their journey toward becoming smart. To achieve this, this chapter clarifies the principles and key features of sustainable smart cities, discusses the role and fundamentals of performance indicators, and critically analyzes various metrics established by global organizations. By synthesizing these performance indicators, the study proposes a framework for sustainable smart city performance indicators that can be applied across several key sectors, including "environmental, urban planning, governance, economy, transportation, information technology, and communications." This framework is designed to facilitate the transformation of emerging cities into smart cities by assessing and boosting their readiness for change. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology and its licensors 2025.
