Abstract Sustainability is one of the primary goals in the urban transformation strategy developed to create more resilient and smarter cities using resources more efficiently. The goal of being a sustainable city should guide the decisions for necessary city improvement works and be able to produce solutions using up-to-date digital resources in accordance with the customized structure of the city. In this research, we aim at exploring evaluation models developed to measure the performance of smart cities. The main pillars and sub-dimensions in the models are categorized into two separate branches that are academic publications and institutes' research. The decision-making methods and system mapping tools applied in the evaluation models are discussed. Furthermore, the benchmark analyzes for the selected KPIs of the models and the open issues in this domain are revealed. © 2023 IEEE.
