Abstract The paper presents the "Smart Cities project" developed with 9th grade students from Lourenço Castanho School, 'Lourenço' is a private school located in São Paulo, Brazil, which has a creative space known as 'Creation Lab.'; this ecosystem at school intends to develop a culture of innovation and creativity. Through the problem: 'Can tech improve quality of life in a city?' and working in a 'STEM-Maker' scenario, students built their own town, using waste, scrap, Arduino and the IoT (Internet of Things), they made smart prototypes to the city aiming an efficient and innovative solution for many global issues. Linking maker movement and citizenship through the project in group action, it was emphasized the fundamental role of citizenship in a whole school community, understanding that 'citizenship is everyone's duty'. © 2019 Association for Computing Machinery.
