Abstract This work in progress paper focuses on engaging children with smart city concepts and design, in particular in disadvantaged areas. Smart city design and development has developed over the years from a predominantly technology-led to a much more human-centred design (HCD) approach which focuses on citizen participation. An important aspect of the HCD approach is to educate citizens on smart city concepts and technologies to effectively inform and engage citizens in participatory design. One group that is often excluded from the smart city discourse and action is children. Research indicates that children, especially those living in disadvantaged areas, have little access to education about smart city concepts and participation opportunities, even though as children and in the future as adults, they are key stakeholders in smart city design. This work in progress paper presents the preliminary findings from the "Connective Detective"project designed to address this gap. gThe Connective Detective' is a workshop series on telecommunications and smart city concepts for primary schools in Dublin, Ireland, focusing on schools in areas of disadvantage in particular. The project aims to explore the processes and outcomes of this approach to explore telecommunication infrastructure and smart cities concepts and engage children in a design thinking process to explore problems and create prototype solutions for their local area. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
