Abstract In today’s cities, sensor networks play an important role in ensuring security and sustainability. Sensor networks contain many sensors that collect data from the environment. Many elements that are critical for the city’s safety are tracked by sensor networks. This chapter examines the components and functions of these networks. Also, their applications in combating safety issues in cities such as crime, accidents, and disasters are explored. A discussion of how emerging technologies such as digital twins and blockchain are improving the security and integrity of sensor data is also presented. Real world examples of sensor networks with case studies and best practices are examined. These examples show the impacts of sensor networks on safety in cities. Finally, the challenges and future directions of this technology are presented. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
