Abstract With the standardization of the Internet of Things (IoT) protocols, the development of new sensor hardware, the proliferation of smart cities solutions, and interest from governments and funding organizations, the vision of 50 billion connected devices by 2020 is becoming a reality. The Internet protocol version 6 (IPv6) and the standardization of novel IoT protocols such as IPv6 over low-power personal area network (6LoWPAN) are driving forces toward the IoT. On the one hand, the IoT offers tremendous possibilities to develop new applications; on the other hand, it poses new security and privacy threats. Also, unlike conventional resource-constrained networks such as wireless sensor networks (WSNs), security is one of the main requirements in the IoT. Providing security and privacy is a challenge in the conventional Internet and it is even more challenging in the IPv6-connected IoT because of global connectivity, heterogeneous and resource-constrained devices, and direct human intervention. In this chapter, we highlight the security and privacy requirements of the IoT, review the current security and privacy solutions that fit the IoT, and discuss the possibilities and research challenges of developing novel security and privacy solutions for the IoT. © 2016 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
