Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT) has changed how we interact with technology by allowing various devices to connect and share data easily. However, this interconnectedness has also given rise to critical security challenges that must be addressed to safeguard privacy and mitigate risks. This chapter delves into the multifaceted realm of IoT security, comprehensively analyzing the vulnerabilities and threats inherent in IoT ecosystems. This chapter elucidates the challenges of scalability, complexity, and resource constraints by examining the diverse array of IoT devices and their heterogeneous nature. This chapter then explores pivotal security mechanisms such as authentication and access control, discussing various techniques like role-based and attribute-based access control. Additionally, it delves into ensuring data integrity and confidentiality through encryption, digital signatures, and hash functions. This chapter examines well-established protocols like Transport Layer Security (TLS), Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS), and lightweight protocols designed for restricted Internet of Things devices to enable secure communication. Furthermore, it highlights the significance of safe software development practices and emphasizes the need for vulnerability assessments, patch management, and secure coding guidelines. This chapter provides insights into industry-wide efforts to standardize IoT security practices by drawing upon established IoT security standards and frameworks such as the NIST Framework for IoT Cybersecurity and the ISO/IEC 27000 series. Additionally, it discusses emerging trends like blockchain, artificial intelligence, and hardware-based security solutions, elucidating their potential to enhance IoT security. This chapter underscores real-world security challenges and the corresponding mitigation strategies through case studies in smart homes, healthcare IoT, industrial control systems, and smart cities. This chapter summarizes important discoveries, provides suggestions for future studies, and emphasizes the urgent necessity of strong security measures in the IoT environment. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
