Abstract Internet of things (IoT) is an evolving technology where devices, generally referred to as “Things” are connected through a network and can be remotely controlled. IoT finds application in wide range of areas including health care, agriculture, retails, transportation, infrastructure, waste management, water management, smart cities, and many more. Predictions of Cisco and Forbes say that there will be more than 50 billion IoT devices connected by the end of 2020 and IoT market will reach $520B by 2021, respectively. IoT-enabled devices are connected to many numbers of devices that are used in many fields and unfavorable environments. Hence, deployment of these systems faces challenges and security issues which are to be addressed. Also, the need for secure communication and secure data processing is very critical in IoT or any embedded system in general. IoT systems are generally small in their size and cramming more devices on to the system for enhancing the features is a challenge to the designer. The battery power raises another concern in these systems as the IoT systems are meant to be energy efficient. For some applications, they are to be mounted on a hostile environment, where humans cannot have frequent access. In that case, battery power throws a challenge. IoTs are widely used in sensitive applications such as medical field and autonomous vehicles, where the lives of human beings are affected directly. Hence, both hardware and software security of these systems are of vital concern. The security requirements of the systems may differ based on the applications where they are being used. Typically, IoT devices include sensors and actuators, and microchips for data collection and transmission through the network. Since many complex devices are connected, the security management of the entire system becomes complex, compared to the security management of a stand-alone device. Security issues in IoT include data authentication, data leakage, privacy of the user, access security, and so on. With the tremendous advancements in chip manufacturing, dependency on various vendors for IP cores also make the situation more critical. Threats can be injected at any stage of design process, which is invisible to the user. Hardware attacks in IoT systems can be classified into various types such as hardware trojan, reverse engineering, side-channel attacks, and many more. In this chapter, we briefly explain the various types of threats, an IoT is prone to and discuss some of the important challenges and security aspects of IoT-enabled systems. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.
