Abstract This study addresses two objectives: firstly, to discern the relationship between local government, private companies, and the performance of smart cities, and secondly, to elucidate the role of private companies in the nexus between local government and smart city performance. A stratified random sampling technique was used, and 2,000 questionnaires were distributed via an online survey to all urban populations of smart cities in Malaysia. About 399 responses were collected. Findings underscore a positive and significant relationship between local government and private companies as well as the performance between private companies and smart cities. Additionally, private companies were found to mediate the relationship between local government and smart city performance.
