Abstract The complexity of challenges related to the rapid development of cities, coupled with pressures on more effective and inclusive urban governance, requires a new approach to managing urban space. Increasingly, the role of the private sector in this process is recognized, whereby the latter’s resources in the form of expert knowledge, technical know-how, access to sophisticated technologies, and finance, may counterbalance the frequently scarce resources and limited capacity of local governments. In this context, diverse forms of public-private partnership modes of collaboration have emerged and have been tested in urban contexts. Notably, given the variety of roles the private sector may play in the thus defined context, the objective of this chapter is to map, to critically examine these roles, and to make policymaking recommendations. The findings of this chapter suggest that the following roles can be distinguished: (1) contractor of public tasks, (2) expert and advisor, (3) urban innovator and initiator, and (4) partner, engaged also in the governance process. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Anna Visvizi, Orlando Troisi, and Mara Grimaldi; individual chapters, the contributors.
