| Abstract | A smart city is a digitally enhanced urban environment to improve current facilities and services for the benefit of persons and organisations. Smart cities have significantly improved quality of life and services by enabling real-time control of physical objects and providing intelligent information to people in a variety of sectors, including transportation, healthcare, smart parking, public safety, smart buildings, traffic systems, as well as smart farming. However, because these applications collect sensitive data, it is critical to address security concerns at various architecture levels. Critical infrastructures are networked in smart cities, allowing for enhanced data flow across municipal domains, leading to automation in city government and service optimisation. However, due to a lack of defined principles or standards for modelling these data flows, limited systems scalability with different requirements has resulted. As cyber threats become more organised, diverse, and sophisticated, there is a need to be aware of cybersecurity in smart cities with measures to protect people's privacy as well as security. This study aims to help policymakers comprehend the serious situation and to act as a helpful resource for the scientific community by analysing the state of the art. It discusses the primary applications tackling the major risks in design. The study aims to provide an outline of cyber threats, attacks, and countermeasures in the principal smart city sectors. This review adds to a better knowledge of potential threats and solutions, ultimately assisting in the construction of secure and resilient smart city settings by thoroughly assessing the current status of cybersecurity in IoT-enabled smart cities. ©2024 IEEE. |
