Abstract A smart city is a highly urbanized area that thrives on an abundance of data, sourced from both numerical metrics and experiential observations. With the advent of cloud-connected Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, the potential for intelligent cities to collect data from residents, devices, buildings, and various other sources has expanded significantly. This data plays a pivotal role in the management and oversight of transportation systems, utility services, water resource management, waste handling, security protocols, energy consumption, data analytics, healthcare services, and numerous other facets of urban life. This research project is primarily focused on enhancing the security measures of smart cities by developing robust attack detection algorithms. These algorithms are crafted using data from two comprehensive datasets: UNSW-NB15 and CICIDS2017. The objective is to establish innovative strategies for the identification and mitigation of cyber threats within the intricate landscape of smart cities. The study intends to contribute to the development of more effective intrusion detection systems by utilizing real-world network traffic data from UNSW-NB15 and combining insights from identified attack patterns in CICIDS2017. The ultimate goal of this research endeavour is to tailor these systems to the unique challenges posed by safeguarding networked urban environments. Through a comprehensive analysis of these datasets, the research seeks to enhance the adaptability and security of smart cities, thereby bolstering their resilience and ability to thrive in an increasingly connected and data-driven world. © 2023 IEEE.
