Abstract Rapidly growing wireless communication technologies have promoted the use of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) in smart cities. This chapter explains how RIS technology can help transform urban environments, improving connectivity, efficiency, and sustainability. Reconfigurable intelligent surface technology has the ability to control electromagnetic waves in a flexible and dynamic way. This ability can solve many problems of modern cities, such as network congestion, energy shortages, and the integration of various IoT devices. This chapter thoroughly analyzes the main challenges associated with the implementation of RIS, such as the design and optimization of RIS systems, real-time reconfiguration algorithms, and compatibility with existing communication infrastructure. It also discusses future research and development directions of RIS technology and new advances that can further enhance its capabilities. © 2025 by IGI Global Scientific Publishing.
