Abstract Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) are emerging as a pivotal technology in next-generation wireless networks, particularly in enhancing Device-to-Device (D2D) communications. This chapter explores the applications, challenges, and future directions of RIS in D2D contexts. By leveraging programmable meta-materials, RIS can significantly improve spectrum efficiency, enhance reliability, and optimize energy consumption in D2D networks. However, challenges such as beamforming optimization, channel estimation, and practical deployment remain. Moreover, the integration of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) is crucial for optimizing RIS configurations and addressing dynamic network conditions. As we approach the era of 6G, RIS-assisted D2D communications promise to revolutionize how devices interact, enabling ultra-reliable and low-latency communication for various applications, including IoT, smart cities, and autonomous systems. © 2025 by IGI Global Scientific Publishing.
