Abstract Smart city is any urban area, which has the facility of electronically managing the resources efficiently with the help of the internet of things, to increase the standard of life. This system needs several computing devices to communicate with each other. Nodes should be intelligent enough for computing, decision-making and transmitting which will make a city green, self-sufficient, secure, sustainable, equitable and liveable. Disaster management is the need of the day. The system itself should have the capability to warn us before a disaster and also, if it is beyond help, to make enough safety measures, to save lives and infrastructure. Here, we analysed the need for IoT in disaster management and proposed a protocol for earthquake alert and evacuation. It has to have a decision-making element, which decides whether to send the Richter scale reading to the main station if the reading is above a threshold, and also trigger safety measures for evacuation purpose. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
