Abstract Smart city concept will integrate communication and information technology and different other physical devices that are connected to Internet of Things (IoT) network in order to optimise the efficiency of the operations in a city and services offered to its citizens. The study aims to constitute a literature review on IoT, environmental development, quality service to citizens through smart cities and also to explore the limitations for smart cities and future research directions to proceed on. Selected 80 articles of research for the study and classified them based on the research method, journal, publisher and the application on smart city growth. After that identified the benefits, challenges and the futuristic research from the articles that are reviewed. The theoretical model is made by developing more frame work on green IoT green environment, water resilience and management and air quality control. It also explains the smart city development in India and its growth impact. The model validation has been examined by reviewing real-time case studies. The reader could be able to understand the fact that smart city is especially for IoT growth of environment and is to pointed as an emerging concept in market. Researchers could consider this as wide spread idea in research. © 2023 Author(s).
