Abstract Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are recognized as a fundamental cornerstone of Smart Cities. ITS are one of the major applications of VANETs, which integrate the capabilities of wireless networks to smart vehicles. VANETs are a sort of ad hoc network in which cars operate as mobile nodes, connecting with one another and with infrastructure nodes to transmit information about traffic conditions, safety alerts, and other pertinent data. Broadcasting is a critical process in VANETs because it allows information to be distributed to all vehicles within the communication range. The evaluation of statistical broadcast protocols in VANETs is conducted in this paper through comprehensive simulations utilizing realistic mobility models and network conditions. To emphasize the benefits and limits of the studied techniques, performance comparisons are done against other existing broadcast protocols. The outcomes provide light on the usefulness and efficiency of statistical broadcast protocols, which will benefit in their future optimization and deployment in real-world VANET environments. © 2023 IEEE.
