Abstract The main application of vehicular communication networks is intelligent transport systems (ITS). ITS in the concept of a smart city is an emerging technology that aims to reduce road accidents and help drivers to avoid traffic jams. In particular, vehicles could be aware of the local and nearby traffic through V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle) and V2I (vehicle-to-infrastructure) communication. Although current vehicular networking may help the achievement of traffic safety and traffic efficiency, there still exist major technical challenges that should be addressed, due to high mobility of vehicles and high relative speeds between nodes. © 2018 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
