Abstract Transportation systems are an important factor of day-to-day life and of smart cities. Innovations and resources for information technologies and enhancement in the field of communication have facilitated the development and implementation of solutions that have contributed to the evolution of Intelligent Transport Systems and variety of services, such as security, the availability of valuable insights to drivers, and the enhancement of mobility on the streets. Generally, systems developed from these techniques are based on incredibly smart sensors and actuators that allow automobiles to sense and communicate traffic signals. ITSs incorporate different technology and resources to streamline metropolitan mobility in the smart cities. In this chapter, we describe the basic definition of ITS in big cities, the principal implementations of ITSs using vehicular networking techniques such as data dissemination, and others to provide infrastructure not just for services that are useful for drivers and travelers, but also for resources that can be used for management of urban mobility. A full overview of key principles of ITS incorporation in intelligent cities and the complexities of building and sustaining such integration of resource management is also discussed. Finally, we discuss about potential problems and threats that might trigger future work. © 2022 selection and editorial matter, Krishna Kumar, Gaurav Saini, Duc Manh Nguyen, Narendra Kumar and Rachna Shah; individual chapters, the contributors.
