Abstract This paper explores the role of advanced sensor technologies and microactuators in revolutionizing urban transportation systems, a crucial aspect of modern urbanization. Our research examines how these technologies enhance the economy, facilitate nature transformation, and improve living standards by addressing critical urban challenges such as traffic congestion, safety, pollution, and efficiency. The paper delineates the specific areas, challenges, tasks, and potential solutions in implementing an integrated sensor network for comprehensive transport management. Key contributions of this paper include (i) an overview of the urban total transport system and its evolution into an intelligent management system, leveraging a hierarchical approach to vehicle and transport classification; (ii) an analysis of competitive sensing technologies that can be incorporated as elements of the Internet of Things (IoT) for effective system monitoring and management. Our methodology involves identifying the requirements for positioning and sensing in urban transport, defining the pertinent challenges and tasks, and systematically evaluating potential technological solutions. The findings are instrumental in developing smart cities, particularly in enhancing smart transport operation centers. These centers could extend their support to various urban subsystems such as harbors or railway networks, thereby contributing to the broader goal of sustainable urban development and improved urban living conditions. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.
